About the event
“I’m fine.” “I don’t need anybody.” “I’m used to doing everything myself.” When a Black woman has learned to be the person everyone relies on, how do we make room for her to receive care?
Hosted by Damilola Coker, LPC-S, and Nadjie Pierre, LMHC-QS, this live panel discussion explores the “Strong Black Woman” role as an adaptation to cultural, familial, gendered, and racialized expectations. Together, we will examine hyper-independence, emotional suppression, intellectualization, and the vulnerability involved in receiving support.
Designed especially for graduate students, prelicensed therapists, and early-career clinicians, particularly clinicians of color, this workshop combines clinical discussion, a brief case discussion, and audience Q&A. We will consider how to honor a client’s strength while helping her make room for connection, emotional expression, and choice.
